For this residential project in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, we focused exclusively on the mature trees across the front yard. Warm white mini string lights were wrapped around the trunks and extended into the primary branches, allowing the natural shapes of each tree to guide the design. The larger tree received denser coverage through its central trunk and major limbs, while the smaller tree was wrapped with a lighter pattern suited to its scale. Using one consistent color temperature connects both trees while preserving their individual forms. The installation creates vertical definition across the property without relying on roofline or architectural lighting. This tree-focused approach works with the open lawn and provides clear visibility from the street while keeping the residence itself in the background.

The challenge

Both trees are deciduous and were bare when the lights went up, so every wrap stays visible. The larger tree splits low into several tall leaders that rise well above the roofline of the house beside it, and the smaller tree spreads wide from a short trunk. Wrapping them evenly meant working high in the canopy of the larger one.

How we lit it

We wrapped each trunk tightly from the base, then followed the main limbs instead of spreading lights across every small branch. On the larger tree the wraps climb each leader, which gives it a tall, vertical shape; on the smaller tree they follow the limbs outward, so its low, open crown stays readable. Both trees use the same warm white, and the house, shrubs and lawn were left unlit so the trees carry the display.

The result

From the road the two trees read as clear outlines of light against the evening sky, while the dark branches above them still show the full size of each tree. The effect is quiet and restrained.
